Addictions

In their various forms addictions can be immensely destructive not only to you, but to those who are important in your life. They often lead to a lower quality of life, social isolation and loneliness, and take precedence over every other aspect of life. An addiction can reduce your control and ability to participate on a social level, as well as trap you in an ongoing web of secrets, lies and shame. Addictions can lead to multiple losses, including relationships and friendships, health, finances or possessions.

To regain an element of control first requires acknowledgement of the problem itself. It is essential to see it as a negative and to recognise that without it your life can be enhanced on many levels.

Addressing addictions often needs the support from family, friends or professional help. The stigma of addiction leads to longer delays in sharing your problems or seeking help. Taking the first step of admitting that the issue exists and reaching out, is the most important part of your journey towards a better life. It can be a difficult process to overcome addiction, but it is possible.

Addiction can be a physical or substance addiction, or behavioural such as gambling, food, shopping or technology. Causes can be multifaceted and include biological, social and environmental factors which can contribute to the development and persistence of addictive behaviours. The type and severity of an addiction can determine the treatment required, and it can also be a part of other mental health issues such as depression.

Counselling can help to identify and address the behaviours and habits which initially led to the addiction, providing strategies and support in helping you to develop the skills required to achieve change.
